A Few Words From The Program Director

Passages

KVMR Program Director Steve Baker and influential friend We watched and heard him growing up, his once 9-year-old voice later crackling and changing as he aged into a college student. Through it all, Jake Michaels kept the Fab Four's spirit alive with all-request Beatles shows (complete with weekly quizzes and trivia) as part of his mother Jenny's Wednesday Music Magazine (alternate weeks, 4-6pm). Now Jake has his own show, Across The Universe (alternate Wednesdays, 10pm-midnight), but it's no longer Beatles territory as Jake's covering ground from Beethoven to The Shins. Still a young broadcaster perspective but during KVMR's more experimental programming hours. Also joining the late night line-up is Mark Leviton, who is moving his Pet Sounds to alternate Mondays, 10 pm-midnight. Mark will still be offering contemporary artists doing '60s music and '60s artists making contemporary music. Voluntarily leaving our late night lineup are Don Beggs and his long-running Patchouli Haze underground oldies and second generation KVMR broadcaster Sam Gorsky (daughter of jazz DJ Len) and her jam band Red Heaven show. They'll both still be likely heard in substitute spots. Replacing Sam on alternate Thursday nights is Edy Cassell with the conscious hip hop, funk and grooves of Road Dog Radio.

Early morning host Greg Jewett has been selected alternate host of the Monday Music Magazine, replacing Dawn Fischer (who will still be executive producer and a host on Sunday afternoon's Transglobal Sound System). An active volunteer in KVMR's music department and winner of a "Rookie of the Year" award from the Program Committee last December, Greg will mix a variety of genres in what will often be thematic musical selections in his magazine slot.

Bev Klingsick had to leave her Snap, Crackle and Pop Friday program because of a new work schedule. She hopes to continue her valued KVMR work as a substitute when her schedule allows it. And a Class of 2007 broadcaster, Kim Daniels, has replaced David True's Inner Vibrations on alternate Sundays 4-7am, when she'll present Rise and Shine Sunday. Kim has previously been heard on both the Women's Show and Sunday Night Showcase.

Another program note: KVMR's Evening News and Free Speech Radio News headlines and features will run in a half-hour format, beginning at 6:30pm, while a successor is sought for departing News Director Mike Thornton (see story on page 13). Music Magazines will air an extra thirty minutes in the interim.
