WHAT am I listening to? Were the words I said when first tuning into KVMR in the early 90s after relocating to Nevada County from So. Cal. I kept tuning into the wide variety of music and voices I was hearing and I was hooked - my radio dial never moved.
After taking on several musical instruments at a young age and never mastering any, I found myself singing back up in several bands in the Los Angeles & Orange County areas, but it was just for fun on the weekends. Later when the opportunity came along to hit the road driving truck (the big rigs, the 18 wheel kind) I went with it. It took me to all the U.S. states except Hawaii, Florida, and Alaska and along the many miles of mile markers and hundreds and hundreds of radio stations and street musicians, the music was always on ... always changing in genre and mood. It kept the wheels rolling and me awake a lot of the time.
One of my favorite memories from the road is sitting on the front porch in Adamsville, TN with 84 year old May. Her hands, chaffed and callused from picking in the fields, but she played her guitar and sang the best gospel and blues I have ever heard. Memories like that are what I bring to KVMR where the variety of music is the spice I need in my life.
It was in 2001 when I joned the KVMR broadcaster training class. Larry Hillberg was in the class and he spoke to me about the long walk he was starting. I thought, how amazing these people are and amazed at what may be ahead for me at KVMR ... maybe I can do this, maybe I can be a broadcaster!
Not long afterwards I hosted an early morning show, The Artist's Way from 4-7 a.m. for almost 3 years. Then I decided to step down to substitute when needed ... opening roadways to genres I didn't even know I liked, Celtic & International just to name a couple.
Today I'm still traveling the roadways but with music! The variety of music makes me feel as though I am on a never ending road trip that's filled with extraordinary artists and their music. The scenery is more beautiful everyday traveling with the many friends and listeners I have come to meet along the way since coming to KVMR. What a wonderful family!
Now I'm back in the drivers seat with a regular program, alternating with new broadcaster Greg Jewett on Monday's Music Magazine from 4-6 p.m. I can only hope to twist the gears a bit and keep on rolling with music that comes from the heart and the soul of its drivers, music that delivers the goods.
