Americorps Restores the Sierra Vista Community Center

On Saturday, May 29th Larry was visited by Mary Walker volunteer President of the Sierra Vista Community Center's Board of Directors and quite a crowd of young Americorps volunteers that spent the last month refurbishing and painting the community center.

Sierra Vista Community Center is housed in a WPA-built former school in Colfax. The SVCC is a grass roots group of volunteers that now own, maintain, and provide stewardship for the building. They largely do their own fund raising, also administer a trust dedicated to the community. Over the last several years they have made major improvements to the inside including a complete, modern kitchen and re-finished bathrooms.

The SVCC (Otis Wollan) wrote a successful grant request to Americorps, resulting in eleven young folks arriving in Colfax for a month-plus stay. They so far have assisted in the creation of a community garden, have done some painting inside, and are now completing a complete outside paint job.

Ernest Troost

On February 13, 2010, Los Angeles singer/songwriter Ernest Troost visited Back Roads. Celebrated movie and TV theme composer in his day job, and Kerrville Texas Folk Festival 2009 New Folk award winning songwriter winner, Ernest sang his winning songs and chatted about their writing and how he does what he does.

Shay Dillon

On May 12, 2007 local blues vocalist Shay Dillon visited Larry Hillberg on Backroads. Shay is a local blues singer-songwriter, and the 2007 Female Solo Vocalist of the Year on an internet based international music competition. This visit included original live and recorded tunes from her new CD Through the Fire.
